Wegovy 7.2 mg may be prescribed for adults with obesity (pre-treatment BMI over 30) who need additional weight loss support after reaching the standard maintenance dose of Wegovy 2.4mg for at least 4 weeks.
You don’t need to switch to Wegovy 7.2mg if you are happy with your weight loss progress with the 2.4mg dose and can continue to use that as your maintenance dose.
How to use the Wegovy 7.2mg single-dose pen
The pen is designed to be a lot more straightforward. Most people find it quick and easy after their first use. Here's a step-by-step guide to injecting your weekly dose safely for the Wegovy 7.2mg single-dose pen:
Before you inject
Check the pen label. Make sure it says Wegovy 7.2mg and that it's within its use-by date.
Look through the viewing window. The solution should be clear and colourless. Don't use the pen if it looks cloudy, discoloured, or contains particles.
Store it correctly. Keep unused pens in the fridge (2 to 8°C) in their original carton. If you need to take a pen out of the fridge, it can be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 28 days.
Choosing your injection site
You can inject into your abdomen, the front of your thigh, or your upper arm. Use the same general area each week if you prefer, but try to choose a slightly different spot each time to reduce any irritation.
Step-by-step injection guide
Remove the pen cap. There's no needle to attach. It's built into the device and stays hidden before, during, and after the injection.
Press the pen flat against your skin. Apply firm pressure. This is what starts the injection. You should see the yellow bar begin to move and may hear a click. Don't remove the pen from your skin before the yellow bar has fully stopped moving.
Hold the pen in place until the yellow bar stops moving and you hear a second click. This takes around 5 to 10 seconds and confirms the full dose has been delivered.
Remove the pen from your skin. The needle cover locks automatically after the injection.
Dispose of the pen safely. Each pen is single-use. Do not try to reuse it. The full dose should be administered.
Reminder: Don't remove the pen from your skin before the yellow bar has fully stopped moving. Doing so may mean you don't receive your complete dose.
The full instructions for use are also included in the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your pen.
Remember: Only take your medication exactly as prescribed. The above guidance applies only to those who have been prescribed Wegovy 7.2mg and cannot be applied to any other medication or strength. If you wish to discuss your treatment with a clinician (e.g. decreasing doses due to side effects) please get in touch with our team and we will advise you accordingly.
Please note:
Previously, Wegovy 7.2mg was taken in the form of 3 doses of 2.4mg, injected one after another weekly. If you are still taking Wegovy 7.2mg in this format, see the guidance below:
Three doses of 2.4 mg should be injected one after another using the same pen (which contains a total of four doses) but changing the needle for each new dose.
Injections can be given in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Always use a new sterile needle for each subsequent injection.
If injecting in the same area, injections should be at least 5 cm apart and should be injected at the same time and day each week.
Because the 2.4mg pen contains four doses, you’ll have one dose remaining in the pen after your weekly 7.2mg. This remaining dose should be used the following week before taking an additional two doses from a new pen, ensuring you have 3 consecutive doses each week.
