We’re all used to our GPs telling us which strength of medication we need, but with our range of weight loss treatments it works a little differently. Whilst you’re in control, there are some guidelines to understand.
Which strength do I choose?
All new patients to Phlo Clinic that have never taken GLP-1 medications before are required to start on the lowest strength. This allows your body to become used to the active ingredient in the medication and allows us to clinically monitor your progress.
Deciding when to change strength
Before you re-order each month, you should consider if you’re ready to move up a strength. In the re-order journey you’ll be offered the option to move up a strength, stay the same, or move down a strength. Our clinical team will only proactively suggest a strength change if they review your re-order consultation and feel a higher strength isn’t suitable. The choice is yours during the re-order journey, so think about your experience on your current strength. Have you lost weight consistently? Have you had any serious side effects? Has your progress slowed down?
Moving up a strength
Many people move up if they feel that their progress has slowed down or their weight loss has decreased compared to previous months. Those with minimal or no side effects can also tolerate a move to a higher strength.
Staying on the same strength
It can be common to stay on the same strength for anywhere from 1-3 months. If you’re consistently losing weight and seeing results on a specific strength, then there is no immediate need to move up. Your treatment is working as intended!
Moving down a strength
Some people try a higher strength and experience side effects that don’t ease off. Often moving back down to a lower strength allows them to continue with treatment, lose weight and minimise side effects.
Can I switch treatment type?
If you find that one weight loss treatment type isn’t working for you, you can switch to a different option. But you can’t just switch straight away or without clinical guidance.
We encourage you to contact our clinical team to discuss your reasons for wanting to switch and they can help you make the move. Most importantly to note, is that your body needs to go through a ‘washout’ period once you stop your current treatment. For example, stopping Wegovy and moving to Mounjaro, or vice versa. The washout period allows the current treatment to leave your body, so that when you switch, the two treatments don’t interact with each other.
Switching to Wegovy
If you are currently using another weight loss medication, such as Mounjaro, we recommend staying on your current treatment if cost isn’t an issue and you are tolerating side effects well. For anyone needing an alternative, Wegovy provides comparable weight-loss outcomes. Should you decide to switch, our clinical team will guide you through a safe, personalised transition, helping you stay on track with your health journey without unnecessary setbacks.
When switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy, start Wegovy at least 10 days after your last Mounjaro dose, at the dose your prescriber recommends.
Note: The manufacturer recommends a 30-day gap to further reduce the risk of side effects. However we understand this could result in stalling your weight loss journey or potential weight gain. Recommending a smaller gap than this is referred to as off-label prescribing.
